Manually install the autoupdate tool to bypass any issues
If you encounter any problems launching the tool via Microsoft Office suite apps, you can manually download and install the Microsoft AutoUpdate software. The package installer will handle the deployment procedure and you will be able to find the tool in your Applications directory, under the Microsoft folder.
Of course, you can launch the utility directly from the Applications and it will function just the same. Note that if the problem persists, you need to check if the Microsoft AutoUpdate app is included in the list of privileged helper tools and go through the installation process all over again if not.
Allow the autoupdate tool to download and install software on its own
Within the Microsoft AutoUpdate main window you get to decide if you want to check for updates manually or have the application automatically do that for you. In the latter case, you will receive notifications whenever there is a new version available.
At the same time, you can allow the Microsoft AutoUpdate app to automatically download and install the updates, in which case the user interaction is reduced to a minimum.
Furthermore, you have the option to join the Office Insider program, in which case, you will get early access to new builds. However, keep in mind that there are two modes: Slow (fully supported builds that imply minimal risk) or Fast (unsupported builds and you can help by reporting issues).
